When We Started
In 1936, Macedonia Baptist Church was organized and so named by the leading of the Holy Spirit, at the Church’s first meeting held oh March 30 of that same year. Macedonia was organized by five members of the New Light Baptist Church, under the guidance of their Pastor. Rev. P.S. Wilkinson, who willingly answered the call to the desperately needed ministry here on the South side of San Antonio.
Our First Meeting & Pastors
In that first meeting in 1938. Rev CD Polk was selected and answered the call to be the first Pastor of this great church. The members of this new Church met in homes, until the Lord blessed the members to purchase their own building in 1939. This first structure was a converted military frame building, located at Kelly Air Force Base. The need for more training area and space to house military personnel, during World War II, caused these faithful servants to move to our present location, 963 S. W. 40th Street.
After being settled in their new area, Rev Polk relocated as Pastor in Greenville. Texas and Rev. W.C. Salons became Pastor. After his tenure Rev Salone departed and Rev. L.Z. Walker accepted the call as Pastor. Rev. Walker served two years and Rev. Lawson, assisted by Rev. Prince, served as leaders until the church called Rev. LCD. Jefferson, Rev Jefferson served a year and Rev Elmo Christian; associate minister and a Son of Macedonia, served as Pastor until Rev, Roland Franklin was called in October 1965 under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Franklin served faithfully until he was called from labor to reward in June 1985.
Reverend Dailey
On December 29, 1985 Rev. Jerry Wm. Dailey officially assumed the pastorship of the combined church body. Since that time the congregation has continued to grow. Under the dynamic leadership of Pastor Dailey who is involved in every phase of religious life locally, state and national, our Church has embraced the motto ‘We are a Church with an Exciting Ministry Where Love is Intentional and Discipleship is our Goal.”.
We have been honored as one of the leading churches in the state of Texas and Nation in our Discipleship Training Ministry. Small group classes ranging from, Master Life to our most recent Spiritual Gifts. Macedonia’s ongoing studies of Gods Word has blessed our church tremendously and has made a difference in our overall ministry of reaching, teaching and ministering.
Renovation
The renovation of our sanctuary in 1995 allowed us to seat over 500 congregants, but even that has capped, and we were praising God.
Adding to Our Family
In 1997 -1998 the Lord added to our church family over 400 members.
We were also blessed with many ministries here at Macedonia. Sunday Bible Study, and Children’s Church; Women Ministries, Men Ministries, Family Ministry, Care Group Ministry – out reach program for our first time visitors, Lay Counselor Ministry – our in reach program for all of new members, just another way to keep the back door closed. God took us to new and greater heights in our Music Ministry, with our first Ordained Minister of music, Bro. Gary Givens and currently under the leadership of our Minister of Music, Bro. Michael Potts, and a very spirit-filled music staff. The Mass Choir and the Brotherhood Chorus are often asked to sing at other religious programs throughout the city. We are also proud of our Jerry William Dailey (JWD) Angelic Choir (Preschool Children through 8th grade).
In May 1998 we started a United We Build Campaign to undergo a much needed Education and Administrative Building under the leadership of Pastor Dailey.
Education & Administrative Building
In 1999 the vision to build came to pass. When completed it housed Administrative offices and 36 classrooms including a nursery and prayer room.
This is a brief summary of 72 years of committed, dedicated and faithful service – all for the cause of Christ. The past spiritual leaders and members of Macedonia laid the foundation for the future. We the members of Macedonia Baptist Church must… ” press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”
[Philippians 3:14] .
